Environmental Exposures in Singapore Schools: An Ecological Study
Divya Periyakoil graduated from UC Berkeley in Spring 2020 as a Regent’s Scholar with dual degrees in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science (EECS) and Data Science with a focus in Human and Population Health. She is currently working as a researcher under CITRIS and the Banatao Institute at UC Berkeley RAISE (Research in Artificial Intelligence for Sustainable Energy) Lab in collaboration with the Berkeley School of Public Health. She has an avid interest in population health, the social determinants of health, and the public health implications of social disparities, with the goal of promoting health equity for the underserved. In the future, she hopes to apply computational and data science techniques to help solve the thorny health problems that plague humans.
In this presentation, Divya will discuss global climate change as a clear and present danger to our environment. Unfortunately, very little is known about the impact of climate on human and population health. People in Asian countries are more susceptible to the negative impacts of climate change and the subsequent environmental exposures due to the high population density, rapid urbanization and natural geography of the regions. The objective of her multidisciplinary ecological study was to explore the impact of environmental exposure on the comfort and academic success of school children in Singapore.
