Doctor Ndola Prata representing Bixby Center at the National Research Council Committee on Population’s Workshop on Recent Trends in Fertility in Sub-Saharan Africa

Ndola Prata, MD, MSc recently represented The Bixby Center for Population, Health, and Sustainability, University of California Berkeley, at the National Research Council Committee on Population’s workshop on recent trends in fertility in Sub-Saharan Africa. Invitees include representatives from major international development and aid organizations including the World Bank, The United States Agency for International Development (USAID), and the United Kingdom’s Department for International Development (DFID). Hosted at the National Academy of Science in Washington DC from June 15 to 16, the workshop included a plethora of engaging lectures from leading scholars which addressed the influence and consequences of culture, socio-economic trends, and demographics on contraceptive use and fertility in Sub-Saharan Africa. Dr. Prata presented and lead the discussion on contraception and its effect on larger Sub-Saharan fertility trends. The conference closed with discussions of policy options and opportunities, exploring methods to apply information about fertility to create meaningful reform in the region.
