Ensuring access to quality abortion care: Confronting stigma and advancing women’s rights

October 4, 2015 @ 9:00 am - 1:00 pm

The Bixby Center is delighted to share about an event that we co-hosted with FIGO, Ibis Reproductive Health, EngenderHealth, Marie Stopes International, International Planned Parenthood Federation (IPPF), Gynuity, WomanCare Global, Population Council, and Pathfinder International. This event took place at the Vancouver Convention Centre on October 4th, 2015. Participants shared experiences with abortion stigma and stigma reduction efforts from their clinical, health systems and other programmatic interventions and collaboratively developed practical recommendations for mitigating stigma and advancing women’s rights.

Meeting Purpose:

By focusing on the practical effects of stigma on quality of care as well as sharing tools and other resources for stigma measurement and mitigation, workshop participants will be able to:

  • Make individual and institutional-level commitments to examine and challenge stigma and add to the body of evidence
  • Apply shared frameworks and tools to reduce abortion stigma in their workplaces and communities
  • Work to ensure delivery of and access to high-quality abortion care for all women who seek it

Pre-Congress technical meeting and networking lunch, co-organized by:  Ipas and inroads (The International Network for the Reduction of Abortion Discrimination and Stigma) and co-sponsored by: FIGO, Ibis Reproductive Health, EngenderHealth, Marie Stopes International, International Planned Parenthood Federation (IPPF), Gynuity, WomanCare Global, Bixby Center for Population, Health and Sustainability, Population Council, and Pathfinder International.
