Internships

Kate Clouse, MPH Candidate

Kate and her colleague Nzwakie at the RHRU

For the summer between the two years of her MPH program at UC Berkeley, Kate Clouse worked for three months as an intern at the Reproductive Health Research Unit (RHRU) in Durban , South Africa .  Since the RHRU is a leader in reproductive health research relating to Sub-Saharan Africa, Kate was exposed to fascinating studies investigating emergency contraception, female condom acceptability, traditional medicine use in STI treatment and more.  Considering that South Africa has more HIV-positive inhabitants than any other country in the world, all reproductive health matters, including contraception, must be viewed through the lens of HIV/AIDS prevention and treatment.  Kate also had the opportunity to join colleagues as they visited 10 rural clinics, giving her valuable insight into South Africa’s public-sector health system.
