Making a Difference with Misoprostol: The Case of VSI

Preventing Postpartum Hemorrhage at the Community Level: A Compendium of Operations Research

VSI in collaboration with local and international partner organizations conducted operations research (OR) across seven countries in Africa and Asia to determine the feasibility, acceptability, and program effectiveness of misoprostol use to prevent postpartum hemorrhage (PPH) at the community level. Developed for policy makers, stakeholders and researchers, the compendium includes an overview of the basic components of the OR model, country program summaries, and cross-cutting results and best practices to contribute to the growing evidence base on the community-level use of misoprostol to prevent PPH.

Expanding Access to Postabortion Care Services in Rwanda

2013

This brief summarizes the final results of a comprehensive postabortion care (PAC) pilot program conducted by the Rwanda Ministry of Health and VSI to address maternal deaths due to unsafe abortion. The results demonstrate that enabling mid-level providers at health centers to provide PAC through the integration of misoprostol as a treatment method increases the availability of PAC services and brings them closer to women.

This brief summarizes the final results from a collaborative postabortion care (PAC) operations research led by the Zimbabwe Ministry of Health and Child Care and VSI. The results demonstrate that misoprostol, a safe and effective treatment option for incomplete abortion and miscarriage, brings PAC services closer to women in need at all levels of the health system.

VSI's Global Misoprostol Map presents a snapshot of the current registration status of misoprostol worldwide. Registration is the process by which a drug is approved by a regulatory agency for importation, distribution and marketing for a specific medical indication after a thorough review of its effectiveness, safety and manufacturing process. It is a key strategy and critical first step to improving access to any drug or device.
